Hello, my name is Julie, and I am an Associate Professional Clinical Counselor at Central Valley Family Therapy. I enjoy working with various populations of all ages, genders, and socioeconomic backgrounds. In the therapeutic process it is my hope that I can help you to find your strengths and explore what these strengths mean to you, and your growth as an individual. I believe everyone has something special about them that helps make our society strong. I firmly believe that my role is to provide support and guidance to help you make positive changes in your life. I help facilitate this in treatment by exploring your past, present and hopes for the future to highlight the strength and resilience you have built along your way. I view therapy as a developmental process where one can learn the most about themselves and become aware of what they have to offer, and that will guide you towards reaching your goals.
My Approach & Values
Julie Cunningham is an Associate Professional Clinical Counselor who is passionate about working with all clients towards the goals of self-empowerment and acceptance. Julie is particularly keen on working with adolescents, young adults, couples, and older adults. She specializes in trauma recovery, victims of sexual abuse, and those that are experiencing symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Originally from California, Julie received her Bachelor of Arts from California Baptist University. While in college her passion for music and the arts developed a sensitivity to creativity and a passion for finding strengths in vulnerable populations developed. She then attended graduate school at California Baptist University where she began her career in counseling serving students between the ages of 16 years to 65 years old in the Moreno Valley area. It is here where she learned how to integrate spirituality into self-care. After graduating with her master’s degree, Julie continued to work with underserved populations at Riverside Behavioral Health in their dual-diagnosis programs, where she focuses on receiving training in working with individuals experiencing addiction, and co-occurring mental health disorders.
Julie is dedicated to bringing compassion as well as directive care to children/adolescents, adults, couples, and their families. Julie utilizes an eclectic approach to treatment, integrating techniques from strength based therapeutic models, as well as, dialectical behavioral therapy, emotionally focused therapy, and systemic family therapy orientations. She emphasizes seeking to address people not solely on an individual level, but through the analysis of the individual’s interactions with various systems and environments. She believes that every client is unique, and thus requires a unique approach to treatment.
In her spare time, Julie enjoys art, music, standup comedy, traveling, family quality time, board games, and attending concerts.
