You’ve probably heard of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a mental health condition that can lead to anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, and other symptoms following a traumatic event. But did you know that the mental health community often categorizes PTSD into five stages? These stages are:
Impact – Occurring immediately after the traumatic event, this stage involves feelings of shock, overwhelm, guilt, anxiety, fear, and powerlessness.
Denial – In this stage, the brain may block out the traumatic event to protect itself, causing some individuals to deny that the event happened.
Rescue – As individuals begin processing the event, they may revisit the trauma mentally or physically, often feeling confusion, despair, hopelessness, or anger.
Acceptance – At this stage, individuals start to regain their sense of safety and accept the reality of the trauma, often recognizing the need for help. Anxiety and insomnia are common during this phase.
Recovery – Finally, individuals take proactive steps toward healing, such as seeking professional support and implementing coping strategies.
