“When we deny the story, it defines us. When we own the story, we can write a brave new ending.” -Brene Brown

Hello, I’m Carissa, an Associate Professional Clinical Counselor at Central Valley Family Therapy. I enjoy supporting individuals through all stages of life, especially during times of transition.

I view therapy as a collaborative journey, focused on understanding your unique values and helping you build self-awareness, confidence, and resilience. My goal is to empower you to make meaningful changes by exploring how your past and present experiences have shaped you.

Using evidence-based approaches, I’m here to provide compassionate support and guidance as you move toward a stronger, more empowered future.

My Approach & Values

Carissa is an Associate Professional Clinical Counselor committed to helping individuals find purpose, direction, and fulfillment in their lives. She takes an integrative, client-centered approach, combining self-discovery with practical techniques to support personal growth and goal achievement.

A Central Valley native, Carissa earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from California State University, Fresno, and her Master of Science in Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling. She is especially passionate about empowering underserved populations and brings a trauma-informed and neurodiversity-affirming lens to her work.

Carissa has experience working with adolescents and adults facing dual diagnoses, including substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions. She specializes in treating depression and anxiety, and incorporates evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Her approach blends directive and existential techniques with a Narrative Therapy perspective, allowing clients to explore their stories, reframe their experiences, and build adaptive beliefs.

She also values a holistic perspective, integrating clients’ spirituality into the healing process when appropriate. Carissa believes that therapy is not only about gaining tools but also developing the confidence to apply them toward lasting change. Each treatment plan is tailored to the individual, honoring their unique experiences and strengths.

Outside of her clinical work, Carissa enjoys exploring local cuisine, discovering family-owned restaurants, and expanding her cooking skills. She also loves hiking in the Sierra Nevada, visiting national parks, and creating lasting memories with her family through outdoor adventures.
